Look I could sit here waxing lyrically about how this stunning 1972 BMW 2002 has not been subject to restoration, more a labour of love by its owner. The result of one man’s obsession to have the best RHD 2002 in the UK. But a shorter version follows to give an idea of the level of work that has been carried out. Anyone looking at the pictures will also see this and further questions are welcome about specific items of interest.
While in bare metal, special attention was paid to items like door gaps and panel fitment and the retaining of original parts where ever possible. After receiving its last of many top coats of paint all exterior bright work plus lenses, headlights and badges were either restored or replaced with new.
Inside new carpets were fitted along with a new headlining, both supplied by BMW. Seats have been re trimmed to original spec with the centres in Alcantara. One area he is not happy with is the door cards, while the vinyl sections are perfect unfortunately the chrome parts do have some ageing to their finish. The owner has tried to find better but to no avail, hardly surprising as his are in better condition than most and BMW do not sell them new!
The car has retained its original “Bullet proof” M10 engine. Once checked, it needed no more than a good clean and service prior to refitting along with the original gearbox that received the same treatment. As you can see by the pictures the level of attention to detail is to be found underneath the car. All the original running gear was removed. Prior to refitting it was serviced, overhauled and checked then painted with colour matched to factory spec, Trimite stove enamel to protect it prior to reassembly. Even the new tyres were chosen as they were replicas of the original Dunlop SP’s the car was shod with in the 70’s. The spare wheel still has its original tyre fitted, date stamped 1971.
In its history and with the car, is its original warranty card, handbooks and brochures. Also a receipt for the Ziebart wax protection from the dealership, that it received when new.
This car would grace any top flight collection or enthusiast’s garage and no it’s not cheap, but then quality never is and it still represents an excellent investment, being so rare to find in this condition and Right Hand Drive.
NOTE: The car is staying with its owner, local to us here in Essex so any seriously intrested in purchasing parties that wish to view, will need to make an appointment. Thanks. G
